Mr. Frank Merks
Being of Dutch nationality, I studied Land and Water Management. After graduation, I could not find a fitting job and decided to pursue a career in what has been my hobby for years: designing and producing tents and other outdoor equipment for mountaineers and adventurers. After working for different companies, I started my own company in 1994, making specialist tents for mountaineering and arctic expeditions. Eight years later, I sold the company to concentrate more on design and engineering and have since done many projects for well-known international outdoor brands. Over time the projects shifted to more ‘professional’ tents for the tent rental industry, civil defence and the military. I worked for companies in the UK, Germany, France and USA, and spent lots of time in production facilities in Europe, USA, China and Vietnam.
I first met NRS International back in 2007 during a conference about Innovative Sheltering. I always wanted to use my skills and knowledge to work in the humanitarian field and develop better sheltering solutions for humanitarian crises. Our paths crossed often at international events and conferences and in January 2014 I joined the company. My main task is to develop engineered tent structures to support humanitarian missions and to set up and manage the production facilities at our factories in Lahore, Pakistan.
I spend half my time in my Netherlands office and travelling to meet customers and suppliers. I spend the other half in our factories. I am proud of the team of talented engineers and textile experts with whom we are now able to produce high performing engineered tent structures exclusively dedicated to the humanitarian field. Different types of shelters have been supplied now and for example deployed during the Ebola crises in West Africa and more resent in Nepal after the earthquakes.
